Lawn Mowing & Lawn Care

Most lawns around Topeka are tall fescue, and tall fescue does best mowed high – around three to three and a half inches – and never scalped. Cutting it short in July is how a green lawn turns brown and patchy by August. We mow at the right height for the season, keep the blades sharp so the grass is cut rather than torn, and finish the job properly: edges along the walks and drive, trimming around beds and fences, and clippings blown off the hard surfaces

You can have the yard done weekly or every other week through the growing season, or just once – after a vacation, before a sale, or when life got busy and the grass got tall. Overgrown lawns are no problem; that’s part of the ‘more’

Landscaping

Good landscaping is mostly about edges and ground. A bed with a clean, defined edge and the right depth of mulch or rock looks finished for years; one without it is back to grass in a season. We lay out beds, set stone or natural edges, spread mulch, gravel and rock, and build small pads and paths – like the gravel area with a natural edge and an 8 x 6 block pad in the photos here

Side yards are a common one: the narrow strip by the house where grass won’t grow, weeds will, and the mower can’t get in. Clearing it back to soil and finishing it with gravel turns it from a chore into something you never have to think about.

Tree Trimming & Removal

Kansas storms are hard on trees. Every spring and summer there are limbs hanging over roofs that the next thunderstorm or ice storm will bring down, and fast-growing trees that were planted too close to a house twenty years ago. Trimming limbs back from the roof, gutters and siding before they become a problem is a lot cheaper than the repair afterwards

When a tree has to come out – like the trees that had grown up in front of a recently purchased house in the photos here – we take it down, clean up the brush and leave the yard ready to use. Late fall and winter are good times to schedule tree work: the leaves are off, so it is easier to see the structure, and spring is busy. Trees touching power lines are a job for the utility, Evergy, not for a yard crew

French drains • Downspouts • Standing water

Drain Installation

A lot of Topeka sits on heavy clay soil. Clay soaks up water slowly and holds it, so after a hard rain the water has nowhere to go – it pools in low spots, turns the yard to mud, and sits against the foundation. A French drain gives it somewhere to go: a gravel-filled trench with perforated pipe that collects the water and carries it to a place it can drain or disperse

Every drain starts with where the water actually goes in a storm, which is why we look at it in person. And before any digging, the underground lines get marked – Kansas 811 marks gas, power and other utilities for free, and the law asks for at least two full working days’ notice before digging. One of our Yelp reviewers mentions French drains by name; it is a job we know well

Yard Clean-Ups & Brush Clearing

Some yards need more than a mow. A house that has sat empty, a rental between tenants, an estate, or a back corner that got away from you: vines and honeysuckle growing through everything, leaves and debris piled up, brush where there used to be lawn. These are the jobs Mow N More takes on with the trailer – like the vacant house in our photos, where the vines and honeysuckle had grown through the whole yard.

We clear it, cut it back, rake it out and haul it away, so the property is ready to show, sell, rent or simply enjoy. Seasonal clean-ups in spring and fall are the lighter version of the same thing: leaves out, beds tidied, everything ready for the next season.

Outdoor Repairs & Handy Work

Outside a house there is always something: the shed ramp that has gone soft, the step that rocks, the board that’s rotted through. They are small jobs, but they turn into safety problems if they are left. In the photos here, a badly deteriorated shed entrance had the damaged wood taken out and the ramp rebuilt with fresh, treated lumber – solid and safe to use again

If it’s outside and it needs fixing or building, ask. That is the ‘more’ in Mow N More, and it’s often easiest to take care of at the same visit as the mowing or the clean-up
